PART B: PORTFOLIO/PROJECT FILE

The requirements of the portfolio
The candidate is required to prepare a written Portfolio/Project File on the place of music and liturgy within the worship of the candidate’s church. This substantial dossier should take the form of a critical commentary on, and analysis of, a period of approximately sixth months within the worshipping life of the candidate’s church, normally covering the portion of the Christian Year from the First Sunday in Advent until Pentecost/Whit Sunday inclusive. Candidates who, during the relevant period, are worshipping regularly at more than one church or chapel, may base their submissions on their experiences at all such places.

The content and manner of presentation of the Portfolio should reflect the candidate’s understanding of the content and context of successive acts of worship in his or her own church or churches.

The areas to be covered
While the organisation of content is left to the candidate’s discretion, the Portfolio should include the following:
• a brief profile of the church, referring to denomination, geographical region, size, traditions of churchmanship, etc.;
• service papers and booklets prepared by the candidate and others;
• a description of the musical and liturgical traditions and resources, and the candidate’s part in them;
• an outline of the music used within worship, whether choral, congregational, or instrumental; a note on the hymnbook(s), psalter(s) etc. used; an assessment of the music’s relevance to the usual pattern of worship.

The Portfolio should also contain a diary of events, including coverage of special occasions, supplemented by reports of relevant meetings (as of a worship/liturgical committee), rehearsals, etc., during the designated period.
